HAI NEW MEMBERS! I'd like to welcome you to the group! Please have a look at the Challenges that are currently open to the right! And below:

CHALLENGE #2 seraphyne.deviantart.com/art/C…
CHALLENGE #1 seraphyne.deviantart.com/art/C…
:iconskraww:'s Color Scheme Challenge rozzers.deviantart.com/art/Col…

~~~~~*********~~~~~
What is this group?
This group is a place where people who are looking for challenges can come and create something brand new every month, maybe more than once a month if there's interest.
What kinds of challenges?
COLOR SCHEMES! We encourage you to create your own piece of art using the color scheme that this group provides monthly (or maybe more often). Please only use the colors given in the challenge, and use ALL of them (Sometimes mods will throw in an optional extra color, but the main four or five must be included). Sometimes the colors might be difficult to tie together or we may be working with colors you hate, but then that's the challenge.
~~~~~*********~~~~~

What is allowed?
1. Your own drawing is preferred, but if you aren't feeling creative in the drawing department, let us know that you're using someone else's lineart. It's only fair.

2. Four to five colors will be used for the challenges. We would like you ONLY to use those colors, but when stated in the challenge description there might be an optional color available to use (usually black or white). We will tell you when you are allowed to use black and white for the challenge.

3. Traditional and digital art are both allowed. The point is to work with the colors, and if you want to give yourself an extra personal  challenge matching the colors on traditional art might be the way to go.

4. At the end of every challenge we shall hold a poll where everyone will be able to vote for which piece best use the color scheme. You must vote for three pieces. The winning art work shall remain in the featured folder even after the month's art is moved to the appropriate challenge month folder.

~~~~~*********~~~~~
What is NOT allowed?
1. Drama. It will be dealt with by the removal of all participates. Deviations deleted. End of story. We are old enough (and if not, then mature enough) to talk rationally and be respectful of one another.
2. Stolen lineart. If we find out that you did not credit someone else's art, you'll be removed from the group and your deviations will be deleted. Someone worked too hard on their art for you to slap your name on it for free. PLEASE NAME THE SOURCE IF USING SOMEONE ELSE'S ART.
3. Photo-manipulations will not be allowed. What's the challenge is you just submit the colors into the gradient and change the scheme that way?
4. Using colors that are not created from the color set given for the month. Blending is allowed, but please remember to recolor backgrounds, canvases, paper etc., and use the colors provided to create shades and light.
~~~~~*********~~~~~

Tips and FAQ
- You may blend the colors, apply brush modes, turn them into accent layers, or use them as is. The challenges are all about learning about color through using it and playing with it. All we ask is that the pure color remain on your pallet.

- All content must be in line with dA's etiquette policy. Basically artistic nudes: Yes. Pornography: No.

- You may submit more than one piece for the monthly challenges, but please specify one which you would like to have voted upon.

- Submit your piece for the monthly challenge to the Featured Gallery instead of Finished Challenges.

- You do have to be a member of the group to submit deviations.

- Write somewhere in the artist's comments what color scheme you used. A link back to the group is appreciated, but the important thing, particularly with older works, is that we know it's our color scheme and not some random picture that we need to reject from the gallery. An example statement:

"Made for the Colour-Schemes October 2045 challenge. The original pallet is at [this handy link]"

- For traditional artists: recolor your canvases or paper with a color from the color set if your paper color does not match one of the colors offered in the color set (white is usually only allowed in about half of the color sets).

Does transparency count as a colour? Are we allowed to make the background/other part of the drawing transparent?

You do not. You may join the group at any time with no promise of ever participating, though we would love to see something from you. :)

No, you can join (and leave) whenever you like! A submission is not required.
You can also vote for each challenge's winners even when you didn't submit anything or join the group :)

You can join the group and participate in any challenges you want - only the current month's entries will be eligible for the voting contest (if you submit a piece for a previous challenge we can just put it in the folder for that month, I believe).

can I use diferent layer modes?
I´m not sure, since some of them transform the colors a lot...

The colours have to be recognizable within the composition. They can be blended together, lightened, and darkened, but the piece must have the original colours somewhere.

You can, if it can be seen that the final colors are derived from the ones in original palette. (Though I don't recommend relying heavily on it.) The same goes for blending existing colors.
If you're not sure then describe how you get the final colors in your entry's description.

Here are the winning entries using color blending/layer modes:
Go Little Owl! : This uses multiply (as stated by the artist) to create darker tones (black was not allowed)
Traveling to the Center of the World : This one relies on color mixing (white was allowed)

Hope this clear things up for you :) (Smile)

I'm I allowed to have a black border on my entry (like when people sell prints sometimes they put a border?).
This is when black is not allowed in the colour scheme.

Will allow this time, but it's just as easy to use the darkest color provided to do the border instead of black.

No, I am afraid a black border is not permissible if it is not in the color scheme. You may use the really dark blue, or white as options for a hard boder, or perhaps the magenta? That might be really striking, although it might blend into certain bits of the background... Still, it's absolutely incredible. The little green rosette amazes me.

Okay, its dark blue now.
Ahhh, thank you, I had lots of fun with this one.
That green was so hard to fit into the colour scheme.

Just clarifying, this is the prize for winning a challenge? I would still enter even if there isn't a more 'physical' prize, of course, but I'm not sure I understand what happens if you win.

Well when the group first started I had a friend who created banners for the winners, but she wasn't able to continue to do that. So basically the winners get recognition and the first place piece stays in the gallery with the challenge. It's a small prize, I know, but so far all we can do.

There is no prize per say, but the winning submission gets to stay n the featured folder yes. The idea of the challenges is just to get people to enjoy experimenting with colours and challenging themselves in a relatively non-competitive environment :)

All work for a month's challenge is placed in the featured folder. Then, at the end of the month we create a voting sheet and ask all the group members to vote for their top three pieces of the month.

If you place first when the votes for the month are tallied, the prize is to remain in the featured folder, AND you are mentioned, along with the other top three, in our journal. We're not really a prize granting contest group, as much as a challenge for your art skills group.

If you get second place or lower, your piece is moved from the featured folder to the month's gallery. So if you want to see the kinds of things that people make during August, for example, you can head on over and check it out. I like to fly by the older pieces every so often. There's a lot of awesome to look at.

if you can create a darker colour by blending the colours provided then yes, but otherwise no because that would be outside of the colour scheme.

I don't know what kind of traditional media you would be using, but we usually hope that you'll be able to mix the colors to achieve darker shades. For example, in this month's challenge, both the purple and the sage green are very dark, and if you added them to any of the other colors, you would be able to get decent shading. The challenge of a color scheme is in using only the colors given, after all. :)

Here, for example, *twapa mixed the teal, the orange, and the magenta to get the dark color on the parrot's beak.

This is harder in colored pencils than it is with paints, but there are plenty of blending technique tutorials out there for you to use.

Hmm, I have a few questions (sorry if they have already been answered).

1. May we use different shades of the colours? Because in order to shade an object, I need a darker tone of that colour.

2. Does the lineart have to be one of the colours as well, or can it just be black?

3. Does the drawing have to just be for this challenge or could I enter it into a contest as well?

And I think that's it for now. ^^"

1. You must use the colours provided only to shade. You can blend these colours together to get intermediate shades or use opacity and layer options to make it darker/lighter.

3. You can only use black lineart if black is an option in the challenge.

3. You are free to use the drawing for whatever you wish.

Answering this here because other people will be able to read through it if they have the same questions. :)

Assuming that you are doing digital art (I've never tried doing one of the challenges traditionally. I would recommend noting Cofounder *twapa about what to do with traditional color matching and blending)

1. You may use brush modes like multiply, but I personally recommend using the darker colors in a color scheme as your shade color and blending it in with the lighter bases to create shading. Using colors like that can make a piece look extremely vibrant.

2. If black is allowed, use it for your line art. If not, however, like in this month's challenge, you must use the colors provided in your line art.

3. We put no limits on where art created for our challenges may be used. However, a lot of the contests in and around dA require that you make totally new pieces for them. Just make sure that you won't be disqualified from any other contest you submit your work to, as that's not fun.

Hope this helps, and always feel free to ask more questions. (Sorry if this is the second time you've received this message, I ran into a technical error when posting my reply the first time.)

you may use blending brushes as long as the colors you're blending are the ones provided for the challenge. I know that blending creates new colors but you're still only using the colors in the challenge so it is acceptable. Sorry for not responding sooner.

If you mean something like "Add Water" in SAI or the smudge tool in Photoshop, then yes, you may blend the two colors together (for example, the green and the red in this month's challenge could get you an ... interesting brown from "Add Water") to your heart's content. The idea is to go in with whatever color you are given on your brushes, and then use whatever technique you wish to get the most out of that color, or two colors in this case.
